Classroom Course » Key Point Refresher to Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training® (HYBRID)

The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® program is a safe, nonharmful behavior management system designed to help human service professionals provide for the best possible Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecurityTM of disruptive, assultive, and out of control individuals-even during their most violent moments.

Please note that this is a blended/hybrid course where part of the course is taken online and then the skills are practiced in a classroom setting.  Participants are emailed a link to the online content the month before they are due.  Participants must complete the online portion prior to registering for the skills section and will be emailed a link to complete the online portion.  Participants must use a computer that does have sound and the capability of printing off completed notes/exercises to bring to the skills session.    Please note that once you login in to the CPI Hybrid Website, the license to use the course cannot be transferred to another participant and the cost of the license (course fee) will be incurred by the program. Generally course links/keys are issued one month prior to the course expiration.

Two Essential Components
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention^® hybrid training consists of two components and both parts are necessary for an individual's successful completion of the program.

1. Web-based Instruction
   The web-based component contains a variety of interactive presentations, scenarios, videos, and learning assessments that relate to each unit of the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention^® training program. During the web-based instruction, the program terms and definitions are solidified. This allows for a unique focus on application during classroom instruction.
   
   Certified Instructors' Role - Certified Instructors direct their participants to a secure website to access this component. They also provide support by being available to guide participants through the web-based learning.
   
   Participants' Role - Participants receive access directions from their Certified Instructors and complete the web-based instruction before attending the classroom session.
   
   
2. Classroom Instruction
   The face-to-face Certified Instructor-led component builds on the web-based learning. Discussion, activities, and participant examples prompted from the web-based instruction reinforce program concepts with a focus on workplace application. Additionally, practice of all personal safety and physical interventions are taught and practiced during this portion of the program.

Preventative Techniques

1. Identify the behavior levels that contribute to the development of a crisis and choose an appropriate staff intervention for each level
2. Identify useful nonverbal techniques which can help to prevent acting-out behavior.
3. Use verbal techniques to de-escalate behavior.
4. Demonstrate CPI's Principles of Personal Safety to avoid injury if behavior escalates to a physical level.
5. Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security^TM of all those who are involved in a crisis situation.

Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention^TM and Team Intervention

1. Understand and develop team intervention strategies and techniques.
2. Recognize the importance of staff attitudes and professionalism in responding effectively to those in your charge.
3. Demonstrate physical control and restraint positions to be implemented when physical control is necessary as a last resort due to an individual's dangerous behavior.
4. Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security^TM of all those who are involved in a crisis situation.

Postvention

1. Apply the material covered in training to real-life situations.
2. Find ways to use the time after a crisis (Postvention) as a step toward preventing future crisis.
3. Use a model for action after an incident that will bring about necessary closure, debriefing, and re-establishment of a therapeutic relationship with the individuals involved.
4. Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security^TM of all those who are involved in a crisis situation.
